Carrying blood on board helicopters for administration to patients in need of lifesaving transfusions has been launched for the first time in Iran since April 2017.
The pilot project was started in the province of Zanjan due to its geographical importance as a point of country-wide transportation. Also, the province has some impassable and remote rural areas where providing of emergency air care is sometimes considered as the only way to meet the patients’ needs especially the high-risk pregnant women giving birth. Helicopter carries a full supply of the universal O-negative blood units.
The project is planned to be implemented in other provinces in case of providing the necessary infrastructure.
