Historical Background

Although blood transfusion in Iran has a long history, the new era of blood transfusion started in 1940s.  As it was ratified in the 28th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO), member states were urged to promote the development of national blood services based on voluntary non remunerated donation of blood. Fortunately, years before the ratification of mentioned resolution, Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) was established in 1974 and all blood transfusion related activities from donor recruitment to preparation of blood components and distribution of blood and blood products were centralized.
